Advanced Data Journalism strengthening female journalists in the MENA region

In 2020/2021 the DW Akademie Code Her project qualified young female journalists in the MENA region in data journalism. 26 young aspiring journalists managed to break into the field of data journalism and submit their own data story at the end of a comprehensive and challenging 14-week long training. We would like to share our gathered data knowledge with you on this platform. Be invited to browse through our learning materials and learn more about the data-driven world of data journalism.

// code her

code her was not just a data journalism course. It was a collection of different sciences combined together and contributes to the market with a unique futuristic design

//Journalism//

Revision of journalistic ethics, introduction about data-driven journalism and highlights from similar activities and successful case scenarios

//Storytelling//

Introduction to storytelling, conceptualization of design, and how data can tell a story!

//Data Pipeline//

Starting with a definition of data and ending with a visualized insight, trainees learned at a high level, the whole data engineering process through six data pipeline steps from selection, collection, and preparation, to analysis and visualization.

//Data Ethics//

Ethics of using data was an important topic to add to the course, which covered all the aspects of dealing and interacting with data sources, data files, sharing terms and privacy & access conditions.

//DDJ in Teams//

Working in data driven teams is another layer of knowledge added to the course outline. By adding this layer we aimed at developing interpersonal skills that the participants might need when working in real life projects within organizations or newsrooms.

//Future & AI//

As awareness on new technologies is part of the innovation track, we designed special material related to Artificial Intelligence (AI) and how it can be helpful for individual journalists as well as for newsrooms.

In addition to the different program dimensions mentioned above, basic coding sessions were given during the data pipeline allowing trainees to apply their new data knowledge using basic coding environment. The coding course ran simultaniously during the course and most of the participants joined the program.
